Study Questions
REREAD: Luke 9:1-17
- The disciples were not permitted to take earthly things to offer people as they went. What was the message the disciples were sent out to proclaim? How is this the same for us today?
- The disciples had been gone from Jesus for some time and had come back to tell him all that had happened. They were probably tired and selfishly wanted to dismiss the crowds. Jesus says, "you feed them". Then Jesus tells them to organize the 5,000+ people to sit in groups of 50 not really telling them why. How might you have felt in this exchange?
- The disciples have to keep coming back to Jesus to get more bread and fish to take to the groups of 50. At the end, Jesus has a full basket for each one of them! How does this help us see who Jesus is? How could this be a picture of our earthly lives and our heavenly reward?
REREAD: Luke 9:18-36
- Who does Peter say Jesus could be? What does Jesus teach them right after Peter's response?
- How would Jesus' teaching have been confusing in light of Jesus being the Messiah that was to come and save His people? How is Jesus' teaching just as confusing for us today?
- What do you think Jesus meant in verse 27? Was Jesus wrong?
- How does God the Father answer the question of "Who can this be"?
REREAD: Luke 9:37-50
- Verses 44-45 would have been a challenge to the way God's people had been taught incompletely by their leaders to read the scriptures and view the world. In their minds the Messiah wasn't supposed to be betrayed and die but was supposed to conquer and reign. What does their argument in verse 46 and Jesus' response reveal about God's heart verses their hearts? How is that relevant for us today?
REREAD: Luke 9:51-62
- What is significant about verses 51-56?
