Study Questions
REREAD: Luke 5:1-16
- How could verses 1-8 be misinterpreted towards a prosperity gospel message? How would you push back against such a message?
- Examine the responses of Simon Peter (and also James and John) to this miracle. What were they? What might your response have been in their shoes? How would you have felt?
- What was Jesus’ response (verse 10)?
- What are the implications of Jesus' call to "catch people" for our understanding of discipleship?
- God's word in the Old Testament said that if you touched anything unclean (ESPECIALLY an unclean person) you were unclean, had to wash, separate yourself, wait until evening, and often be declared clean by a priest. (Leviticus 13:1-46,15) In the eyes of all of those watching, Jesus was doing the unthinkable!
- How did the guy ask Jesus, and why is that significant?
- Do you think the guy was expecting Jesus to touch him?
- How powerful do you think that would have been for that man?
- Why do you think Jesus told the guy to follow God's Old Testament law?
- What does Jesus do in verses 15-16? What do you make of this?
REREAD: Luke 4:17-26
- Place yourself in the story. How would you act/feel if you were the paralytic man in this story? How would you act as his friends? What about just someone in the crowd?
- What does Jesus say to the man who was paralyzed? What stands out to you about His response to him?
- How does Jesus demonstrate His authority to forgive sins?
- How does the faith of the paralytic's friends contribute to his healing, and what does this teach us about intercessory prayer?
- Why are the scribes and Pharisees angry?
- Why do they take issue with Jesus declaring God's forgiveness? What does Jesus do?
