REREAD: Luke 4:1-15
- Luke records 3 instances of the Devil tempting Jesus (certainly there were more over the 40 days), what tactics did the Devil use?
- Read 1 John 2:16 - John warns about “the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride in one’s lifestyle”. In which bucket, does the temptations that the devil used most closely fall into?
- Read Genesis 3:6, how do we see these same tactics at work with the serpent in the Garden?
- How did Jesus fight off the Devil and his temptations? How does His example tell us about our lives and how to fight? What two things do we need to be armed with to resist temptation?
- Why was it important for us for Jesus to be tempted?
REREAD: Luke 4:16-30
- What was Jesus message to these so called believers in God in Luke 4:14-30? Why might this have been so hard to hear?
- Jesus brings up Elisha and and his experiences with the widow at Zarephath in Sidon (1 Kings 17:1-24) and with Naaman the Syrian (2 Kings 5:1-19), why did he use these examples?
- What factors contribute to Jesus' rejection in His hometown, and what can this tell us about human nature?
- Why might the people of Nazareth, who knew Jesus from His childhood, find it harder to accept Him as the Messiah?
- How does Jesus' rejection at Nazareth reflect on how we might be received when we share the gospel?
