Handed Over

Under siege, government takeover, economic collapse, gender issues, defiled food supply, slave labor, immigration, competing visions, and uncertain futures. How do we live in and through this?! These are not new problems. The book of Daniel gives us the hope and future where we are all invited to discover The God of Daniel.

Pray

Lord we thank you that you are The God of Daniel. You have a plan that you have been carrying out since the beginning of time. We like the people in Daniel’s day are living in captivity waiting for you to restore us to the promised land. Help us to learn from you and each other. May we represent you regardless of what is handed over to us, be determined and remain where you have us, dream about your kingdom, know when to say we will not, and dream about you. Help us to be honest enough to ask what have we done and be faithful just as others have done before us. You are King of kings and Lord of lords, The God of Daniel. Amen

Study Questions

Remember where we are in the story. God has raised up the nation of Babylon to discipline his children for their idolatry and punish the nations (especially Assyria) for their treatment of His children. God has been warning for generations through many prophets that all this would happen if people would not listen and repent. Now, He has told his people they should surrender the land and themselves to Babylon. After Nebuchadnezzar’s 1st siege of Jerusalem, Daniel with many other young men of the royal family of David have surrendered and been exiled to Babylon. They are now slaves, have been made eunuchs, and have to figure out how they will follow their God Yahweh for the rest of their lives in Babylon waiting for His return.

At fxchurch we talk about the differences between… Promised Land theology- IDEA: We currently live in the promised land that we are trying to keep or a promised land that we are trying to create on earth through our works. Wilderness Theology- IDEA: We are just wandering around living until we die and the next generation takes over so there isn’t much we can do but complain and wait. Captivity Theology- IDEA: We are captives, strangers, and aliens in a foreign land. We are waiting on and telling others about our coming King, His kingdom that He is building, and how to get ready for the promised land He will bring on a new earth with new bodies. (Philippians 3:18-20, John 17:14-18, 1 Peter 2:9-13, Romans 7:21-24)

To avoid the reality of living for The God of Daniel in captivity, much of our christian culture today tends to live and make decisions by PRAGMATIC (whatever works) THERAPEUTIC (whatever feels right) MORAL (whatever is not short term bad for us) DEISM (whatever keeps God off my back and/or keeps Him blessing me). We need learn to be faithful to The God of Daniel.

When we get to chapter 6 of Daniel, the impenetrable Babylon has fallen just as Daniel had prophesied. The Medo Persian empire has taken over. Again, Daniel finds himself in the midst of the fall of an empire with all the chaos that comes with it. Yet, because of who God is and Daniel’s trust in God’s kingdom to come, Daniel will do Just As He Had Done Before.

READ: Daniel 5:30-6:5, 2 Corinthians 6:3-10

  1. Daniel continued to serve God through serving earthly leaders Just As He Had Done Before.
    1. What was the initial result of Daniel’s service in this passage?
    2. Discuss how hard might it have been for and elderly (70-80 yrs old) Daniel to keep faithfully working in the midst of the economic, political, and spiritual upheaval?
  2. History is not sure who Darius the Mede was. He might have been Cyrus, a nephew of Cyrus, Cyaxares, or Gobryas. Secular scholars say that Daniel was not a real person and the book is historical apocalyptic fiction. This same style of scholarship, attacking biblical accuracy, has been used and proven wrong over and over again through new archeological discoveries. (See: the finding of Jericho, the Dead Sea Scrolls, the Tel Dan Inscription, the Ebla tablets, the Pilate Inscription, the Pool of Siloam, seals and artifacts naming Hezekiah and Isaiah, and much more.)
    1. Why do people today still try so hard to find a “charge against…the law of Daniel’s God”?
    2. Discuss why false believers keep making false charges “against…the law of Daniel’s God” and nominal believers keep believing those charges?
  3. How was Daniel an example of what Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 6:3-10?

READ: Daniel 6:6-10

  1. Discuss how Darius was likely so easily deceived.
    1. How do we see leaders still so easily deceived like this in our day?
  2. Just As He Had Done Before for 60+ years, what did Daniel do in light of this deceptive ordinance and edict?
    1. Since it was ONLY a 30 day edict, what might we have done or counseled others to do? Why? What does that reveal about our beliefs and our hearts?
  3. How is the current discipline and obedience of our lives a great indicator of how we will respond in later tougher circumstances?
  4. READ John 14:1-4, Revelation 21:1-5 Where should our prayers be focused like Daniel’s? Why?
