Study Questions
- What similarities do you see between the period of the Judges that Ruth is living in and our time? How does this cycle keep us longing for a REDEEMER?
- They were in Moab for 10 years. It’s difficult to imagine a famine lasting that long. One of the great questions in Ruth 1 is whether Elimelech and his family were acting in direct disobedience to God by leaving the country. Is it possible his death and the deaths of his sons were divine discipline on the family? Why or why not?
- Naomi seems to have trusted God and represented Him to her daughter in laws. However she describes herself as ‘bitter’ in 1:20-21 and seems to be bitter even after she is welcomed home. She sees God as her enemy. Is there a time when you have felt that way? Why do you think she choose to view her losses in that way?
- Think through a time when you have had to decide to return to a place you had left, but were doing so seemingly empty-handed and embarrassed. Can you empathize with Naomi’s response?
- Why do you think Naomi so strongly urged her daughters-in-law to go back? How might this reflect the unwillingness to admit or allow our need for a REDEEMER that people can have?
- Ruth was going to Israelites as a Moabitess. The Moabites were the direct decedents of Lot's daughters who got their father drunk and sleep with him. Ruth would understood all she might have to face. However, Ruth was determined to trust God as her REDEEMER and be a redeemer to Naomi.
- What can we make of Ruth's determined response in v. 16-17?
- How was it that Orpah, facing exactly the same circumstances and the same counsel, made an exactly opposite decision?
- How can Ruth's response to her time period of the Judges and her relationships help us in ours?
- How does Ruth 2:1 set the stage like a modern hallmark or romance movie for another REDEEMER?
