"Forever & Always”

The book of Hebrews was written to exhort believers and specifically Israelites to consider Jesus in the face of their culture. Some believers were turning back to practicing the sacrificial system of the Old Testament that Jesus fulfilled so they could escape being persecuted. As the writer walks the hearers and readers through much of the Old Testament ideas and systems, his desire is to clearly show them how to Consider Jesus in their life now.

God is having the writer of Hebrews quote directly from Psalm 110. Psalm 110 is the most quoted psalm in the New Testament. Throughout the history of God’s people it has been recognized as a Messanic Kingdom psalm. To make His point about the the plan of God, the author of Hebrews is using scripture (in proper context and interpretation) to interpret scripture. He is using God’s words (God’s oath) to explian God’s words (God’s oath).

Because we are not Jewish and far removed from the Old Testament, this section of priests and sacrifices can be tedious and uninteresting to us. However, verses 23-28 tell us that the Old Testament system didn’t go away because it was old, it went away because Christ did something to render it complete and now obsolete.

  1. What did Jesus do? What makes what He did FOREVER and ALWAYS?
  2. What does verse 25 say Jesus is always able to do and avctually lives to do? How might this help us in conjusdtion with Hebrews 4:16?
  3. How does having a FOREVER and ALWAYS mentality help us undertsand and live out Jesus words in Luke 12?
