Jesus we pray that we would consider You in all areas of our lives. May we focus our attention, trust You, soften our hearts, rest, go on to maturity, seize hope, and DRAW NEAR to You. We thank You that Your desire has been and always will be to DRAW NEAR to us from the beginning of creation to the new creation that is coming. Help us DRAW NEAR to You and DRAW NEAR to Your body the church. Amen.

"Draw Near”
The book of Hebrews was written to exhort believers and specifically Israelites to consider Jesus in the face of their culture. Some believers were turning back to practicing the sacrificial system of the Old Testament that Jesus fulfilled so they could escape being persecuted. As the writer walks the hearers and readers through much of the Old Testament ideas and systems, his desire is to clearly show them how to Consider Jesus in their life now.
...met Abraham and blessed him...the inferior is blessed by the superior
- Melchizedek DREW NEAR to Abraham and blessed him not because Abraham earned it or because Melchizedek needed to tell Abrham what to do. Melchizedek was superior priest sent as righteous, peace offering blesser. Why is it vital that the readers and hearers of this letter understand these truths as they Consider Jesus?
- What are the things this world looks for to DRAW NEAR to righteouness, peace, and blessing? Why?
- Let’s be honest, do you really consider the blessings of Matthew 5:3-12 to be superior blessings? Explain.
- A priest points people to righteousness, negotiates peace, and gives blessings. Discuss how Jesus did and does these things for His people so they can DRAW NEAR forever.
For when there is a change of the priesthood, there must be a change of law as well.
- Jesus said He came to fullfill the law and the prophets as our forever priest and king (Matthew 5:17-20). In John 13:33-35, Jesus says He gives us a new command (law) to love one another. Peter later tells believers that we are priests and coheirs in loving and serving one another.
- What does being a loving preist to other belivers look like (hint: think about priestly roles and the priesthood of beleivers)?
- In John 13:33-35, how does Jesus say living out this new command will fulfill His mission?
- The people of Jesus day, like today, were trying to keep and gain the blessings of this world. What does Luke 9:23-25 tell us, His priests, we must do to be sure we DRAW NEAR to Jesus? Why?
- In Galatians 3:1-9, Paul is addressing gentiles (non jews) who were falling into the trap of living by works and the law as an attempt to DRAW NEAR to God and others. God has Paul use Abraham as an example of what?
- Why do you think He raises up Abraham as the example of faith instead of all the other laws and people of the Old Testament?
